Gym backpacks with a shoe compartment: office to gym in one bag

·7 min read

Fieldwrks Reroute gym backpack with a dedicated shoe compartment, mesh divider and 16-inch laptop compartment

A gym backpack that also goes to the office needs one thing a normal backpack does not have: a separate compartment for shoes and a divider that keeps sweaty kit away from the laptop and tomorrow's shirt. The Fieldwrks Reroute (35 L, 780 g) has both, plus a 16-inch laptop compartment. The Teleport (29 L, 795 g) is the smaller choice when shoes ride in a pouch.

Key takeaways

  • The two features that make a gym backpack work are a dedicated shoe compartment and a divider between the used half and the clean half.
  • The Fieldwrks Reroute is a 35 L clamshell with a dedicated shoe compartment, a mesh divider and a padded compartment for laptops up to 16 inches, at 780 g.
  • The Teleport, at 29 L and 795 g, is the smaller gym backpack for people who carry shoes in a separate pouch.
  • Kit should come out of the bag the same evening; the bag should be aired open, and hand-washed, never machine-washed.

Why is a shoe compartment the whole point of a gym backpack?

Gym shoes are the one item that cannot share space. They are damp after a session, they carry whatever was on the gym floor, and they have hard soles that press into anything packed beside them. In a normal backpack that means the shoes sit on your laptop sleeve or against your office shirt.

A backpack with shoe compartment solves this by giving the shoes their own zipped space, sealed off from the main compartment. Sweat and floor dust stay with the shoes. The shirt stays pressed. The laptop stays clean.

Without it, people carry a separate shoe bag, which is exactly the two-bag problem an office and gym backpack is supposed to end.

What a divider does that a bigger bag cannot

Space is not the issue with most gym bag backpacks. A 30 L bag will physically hold shoes, a towel, a change of clothes and a laptop. The problem is that everything touches everything. After the session, the wet towel and the used T-shirt go back into the same space as the clean shirt you will wear to a meeting.

A divider splits the main compartment into a clean side and a used side. Before the gym, one side holds gym kit and the other holds work clothes. After the gym, the used kit goes back into the side it came from and the clean side is untouched. A mesh divider does this while letting air through, so the used side is not a sealed, damp pocket.

If you carry a large load to the office every day anyway, our post on large office backpacks for people who carry everything covers the non-gym half of the same question.

The Reroute as an office and gym backpack

The Fieldwrks Reroute backpack is a 35 L clamshell. The main compartment zips fully open like a suitcase, so it lies flat on the gym bench and you can see both halves at once. Inside, a built-in mesh divider separates the two halves, and a dedicated shoe compartment keeps the shoes out of both.

The padded tech compartment fits laptops up to 16 inches, which covers the larger work machines that a 15.6-inch sleeve does not. Front zip pockets take keys, a lock and a protein bar. Internal slip pockets take the charger and cables. A hidden zippered side pocket holds a water bottle out of sight, and charm loops on the outside are for whatever you want to clip on.

It weighs 780 g. That is the number to notice, because 35 L bags with this much structure usually weigh well over a kilo. The shell is Aerology™ nylon, a proprietary, feather-light, water-resistant fabric with a durable polyester lining and a bright orange interior. Colours: VCR Blue, Robo Black, Dad Brown. How to pack a gym bag with laptop compartment

The order matters. Pack the Reroute like this and nothing clean ever meets anything used.

  1. Laptop in the padded 16-inch compartment, against the back panel. It goes in first and comes out last.
  2. Shoes in the shoe compartment, soles together, laces tucked in. Nothing else goes in with them.
  3. Clean side of the divider: tomorrow's shirt folded flat, trousers if you change at the office, a small pouch of toiletries.
  4. Used side of the divider: gym T-shirt, shorts, towel, and a small dry bag or zip pouch for the post-session wet items.
  5. Front zip pockets: gym lock, wireless earphones, ID card, wallet. Bottle in the hidden side pocket.

The clamshell opening is what makes steps 3 and 4 possible without unpacking. Open the bag flat, swap the used kit into its side, zip, go.

Reroute vs Teleport: which gym backpack?

Both use Aerology™ nylon, both fold flat when empty, and both have a hidden zippered side bottle pocket. They weigh almost the same empty, so the difference is not grams. It is whether you want the bag to separate the shoes, or whether you are happy to do that with a pouch.

The Fieldwrks Teleport backpack is the pick if your gym days are two a week and the shoes live in a pouch you already own. It is 29 L and 795 g, with a padded sleeve for laptops up to 15.6 inches, dual vertical front zip pockets for the small things and a luggage sleeve for travel. Put the shoe pouch at the base and the used kit in a zip bag, and it does the job on a light day. On a heavy day, it is a smaller bag and you will notice the missing divider.

The sweaty-kit routine, and a note on washing

A gym backpack lives or dies by what happens in the two hours after the session.

  • Same evening: take the used kit and towel out and put them straight into the laundry. Do not leave them in the bag overnight.
  • Shoes: take them out, loosen the laces, and let them dry. Wipe the inside of the shoe compartment with a damp cloth if the session was a wet one.
  • Air the bag: unzip the clamshell, open it flat, and leave it open by a window for the evening. Aerology™ nylon dries fast, and the mesh divider lets air through.
  • Weekly: wipe the lining with a cloth and mild soap solution, and check the front pockets for the protein bar wrapper you forgot.
  • Never machine-wash. A nylon backpack with a padded laptop compartment and a water-resistant finish should be hand-washed with mild soap and cool water, rinsed and dried in shade. Our full method is in how to wash a backpack.

In 2026 most city gyms are a metro ride from the office. A bag that opens flat on a locker-room bench and airs out by itself is the difference between a routine that lasts and one that stops in March.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gym backpack with a shoe compartment for the office?

One that separates shoes from clothes and clothes from the laptop. The Fieldwrks Reroute does all three with a dedicated shoe compartment, a mesh divider and a padded compartment for laptops up to 16 inches, in a 35 L clamshell that weighs 780 g.

Is a lightweight gym backpack strong enough for daily use?

Yes, if the weight saving comes from fabric rather than from missing structure. The Reroute and Teleport use Aerology™ nylon, a water-resistant exterior with a durable polyester lining, and both weigh under 800 g while carrying a laptop, shoes and a change of clothes.

Can I carry gym shoes in a backpack without a shoe compartment?

You can, in a cloth or zip shoe pouch at the base of the bag. The Teleport works this way. The trade-off is that the pouch takes main-compartment space and you have to keep the used kit sealed separately, which the Reroute's divider does for you.

How do I stop a gym bag backpack from smelling?

Empty it the same evening, air it open by a window, dry the shoes outside the bag, and wipe the lining weekly with a mild soap solution. A bag that airs out fully every night does not build up a smell; one left zipped with a damp towel inside does.

If the gym and the office are the same day, the Reroute is the one bag that keeps the shoes, the sweat and the laptop apart. If you carry a shoe pouch anyway, the Teleport is the simpler, smaller bag.
