How to wash a backpack (and when to skip the machine)
How to wash a backpack safely: empty it, shake it out, spot-clean marks with mild soap and a soft cloth, rinse with cool water, and air-dry it in shade with the zips open. Do not put a nylon backpack with a water-resistant finish and a padded laptop sleeve in a washing machine or tumble dryer. Hand-washing takes about 20 minutes and keeps the bag in shape.
Key takeaways
- Hand-wash is the safe default for any nylon backpack with a water-resistant finish, foam padding or a laptop sleeve.
- A washing machine can crease the padding, stress the zips and wear the water-resistant finish; a tumble dryer can do worse.
- Most marks come out with mild soap, cool water and a soft cloth; only a very dirty bag needs a full soak.
- Always dry in shade with the compartments open. Direct sun and heat are harder on the fabric than dirt is.
Can you wash a backpack in a washing machine?
For a plain cotton or canvas bag with no padding, sometimes. For a nylon backpack with a water-resistant finish, foam in the straps and back panel, and a padded laptop sleeve, no. This is the plain answer to the most searched question about how to clean a backpack, and it applies to every Fieldwrks pack.
Three things go wrong in a machine. The drum twists the bag, which creases the foam padding and can leave permanent folds in the sleeve. The agitation and detergent wear away the water-resistant finish on the outside, so the bag that used to shed rain starts to soak it up. And the zips and pulls knock against the drum and against each other for 40 minutes.
If you want to understand what that finish does, our post on what water-resistant actually means explains why it is worth protecting.
What you need
- A basin or bathroom bucket of cool or lukewarm water. Not hot.
- Mild soap: a few drops of liquid dish soap, or a gentle liquid detergent with no bleach and no fabric softener.
- A soft cloth or sponge, and a soft toothbrush for zips and seams.
- A towel, and a shaded, airy place to dry the bag.
That is the whole kit. Nothing in it costs more than a bar of soap.
How to wash a backpack in seven steps
- Empty every pocket. Check the slip pockets, the pen loop and the side pockets, then turn the bag upside down and shake it over a bin. Crumbs and grit at the base are what wear the lining.
- Brush the outside with a dry cloth or soft brush to take off loose dust and dried mud.
- Spot-clean the marks first. Dab, do not scrub, with a cloth dipped in soapy water. Work from the outside of the mark inward so it does not spread.
- Wipe the whole bag if it needs it, inside and out, with the soapy cloth. For a very dirty bag, dunk it in the basin for 10 minutes, then work over it with the cloth. Keep the laptop sleeve padding out of the soak where you can; wipe it instead.
- Rinse with clean cool water until no soap remains. Leftover soap attracts dirt and leaves pale tide marks.
- Press out the water with a towel. Do not wring. Wringing creases the padding and can pop stitching.
- Hang it upside down, or stand it open, in shade with every zip undone. Leave it until it is fully dry inside, usually a day in dry weather and two in the monsoon. Never use a tumble dryer, a hair dryer or a heater.
The Fieldwrks Pitstop backpack is a useful example of why this method works. Its Aerology™ nylon shell wipes clean with a damp cloth in most cases, the bright orange interior shows you where the dirt is, and at 620 g the whole bag dries fast once it is hung open.

₹2,799What about monsoon mud, sweat marks and pen ink?
These are the three marks that people in India actually ask about. Each has its own approach.
| Problem | What to do | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Monsoon mud and road splash | Let it dry fully, brush off the dried mud, then spot-clean the residue with soapy water and a cloth. | Do not wipe wet mud; it spreads into the weave. |
| Sweat marks on straps and back panel | Wipe with a cloth and mild soap solution, rinse with a clean damp cloth, dry in shade. Repeat weekly in summer. | Do not soak the foam padding or use a heater to dry it. |
| Pen ink on the lining | Dab a little rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser onto the mark with a cloth, then wash the area with soapy water and rinse. Test on an inside corner first. | Do not use bleach or acetone; they can strip colour from the lining. |
| Food and oil stains | A drop of dish soap directly on the stain, worked in gently with a soft toothbrush, then rinsed. | Do not use hot water; it can set an oil stain. |
The bright orange lining inside a Fieldwrks pack makes ink and food marks easy to spot before they set, which is most of the battle.
How often should you clean a college bag?
A washable college bag is only washable if you do it before the dirt becomes part of the fabric. A sensible routine for a bag used every day:
- Weekly: empty it and shake it out. Wipe the straps in summer.
- Monthly: wipe the outside and the lining with a soapy cloth.
- Once a term, or after a bad monsoon week: the full seven-step wash above.
For a work or travel bag the same routine stretches out, but the once-a-term wash still applies. What not to do
- No washing machine, no dryer. Covered above, worth repeating.
- No bleach, no fabric softener, no harsh stain removers. They strip the finish and can fade the colour.
- No direct sun for drying. Sun on damp nylon can fade and stiffen it.
- No wringing or twisting.
- No storing while damp. A bag zipped up damp develops a smell that is hard to remove.
- No washing with the laptop inside. It has happened.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wash a backpack in a washing machine?
Not a nylon backpack with a water-resistant finish, foam padding or a laptop sleeve, which includes all Fieldwrks packs. The drum creases the padding, wears the finish and knocks the zips about. Hand-wash with mild soap and cool water instead; it takes about 20 minutes.
How do you clean a backpack without washing it fully?
Empty it, shake it out, and wipe the outside and the lining with a cloth dipped in mild soapy water. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and let it dry open in shade. This handles most weekly dirt and keeps the full wash to once a term.
How long does a backpack take to dry after washing?
Hung upside down and open in a shaded, airy spot, a lightweight nylon backpack dries in about a day in dry weather and up to two days in the monsoon. Check the padding in the straps and the laptop sleeve last; they hold water longest.
Does washing damage the water-resistant finish?
Gentle hand-washing with mild soap does not. Machine washing, hot water, bleach and tumble drying wear it down over time. If rain starts to soak in rather than bead off after a long time, that is wear on the finish rather than a hole in the fabric, and the bag is still fine to use.
A backpack that is wiped monthly and hand-washed once a term will look right for years. If yours is past saving, the Pitstop at 620 g is the easiest Fieldwrks pack to keep clean, and the rest of the range is at all Fieldwrks packs.
