The lightweight backpack: why grams matter more than litres
A lightweight backpack is one that weighs well under 1 kg empty while still carrying a laptop and a day of gear. Most 25 to 30 L laptop backpacks sold in India weigh 1.1 to 1.5 kg. The Fieldwrks Pitstop backpack carries 26 L at 620 g, roughly half that, because it drops the frame, heavy hardware and thick padding and uses Aerology™ nylon instead.
Key takeaways
- Under 1 kg empty is a fair bar for a lightweight backpack; Fieldwrks packs range from 620 g to 805 g.
- Weight hides in frames, metal hardware, thick foam and heavy coated fabrics, not in the litres.
- Grams per litre is the fairest way to compare packs: the Pitstop is about 24 g per litre and the 35 L Reroute about 22.
- A typical padded laptop backpack sits at 40 to 50 g per litre, so it carries the same load at roughly twice the empty weight.
What counts as a lightweight backpack?
Backpack listings rarely print an empty weight, and when they do it is buried under the colour options. So here is a test you can run in a shop: pick the bag up empty. If it feels like a full 1 L water bottle, it is not lightweight. A genuinely light backpack in the 20 to 35 L range should land between 500 g and 850 g.
Litres tell you how much you can carry. Grams tell you how much you are carrying before you have packed anything. For someone who lifts a bag on and off a metro seat ten times a day, the second number matters more, and it is the one that never appears on the hang tag.
As of 2026, every Fieldwrks pack weighs under 810 g, and the lightest, the Pitstop, is 620 g.
Where does the weight hide in a backpack?
Capacity is not what makes a backpack heavy. A 35 L pack can weigh less than a 21 L pack, and in our range it does. The grams come from everything wrapped around the space:
- Frames and frame sheets. A stiff plastic or aluminium back sheet exists mostly to make a bag stand up on a shop shelf. On a day bag it is dead weight.
- Hardware. Metal buckles, D-rings, chunky zip pulls and a full metal zip on every pocket add up faster than fabric does.
- Padding. Thick foam on the back panel, the straps and all four walls of the laptop sleeve. Some of it is comfort. A lot of it is bulk.
- Heavy coated fabrics. Thick PU-coated polyester and tarpaulin-style fabrics weigh far more per square metre than a light nylon.
- Layers on layers. Double bottoms, a rain cover stitched into a base pocket, and lining under lining.
None of these is wrong on its own. Each one costs grams, and most listings do not tell you which ones you are paying for.

₹2,799How light are Fieldwrks backpacks?
Here are the five packs with their empty weights, next to a typical padded laptop backpack of the kind sold in most Indian luggage shops.
| Backpack | Capacity | Empty weight | Grams per litre | Laptop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pitstop | 26 L | 620 g | 24 | Up to 15.6-inch |
| Switch | 26 L | 805 g | 31 | Up to 15.6-inch, plus iPad sleeve |
| Sidewalk | 21 L | 700 g | 33 | Up to 15.6-inch |
| Teleport | 29 L | 795 g | 27 | Up to 15.6-inch |
| Reroute | 35 L | 780 g | 22 | Up to 16-inch |
| Typical padded laptop backpack | 25 to 30 L | 1.1 to 1.5 kg | 40 to 50 | Varies |
The number that surprises people is the Reroute. It is the largest pack in the range, zips fully open like a suitcase and has a dedicated shoe compartment, yet it weighs less than the 26 L Switch. That is because the Switch carries extra hardware for its second job: it converts into a hand tote, with snap-closure top handles and removable straps that tuck into a pocket. Those 185 g buy convertibility. A fair trade if you use it, dead weight if you do not.
Grams per litre: one number to judge any backpack
Comparing a 21 L bag with a 35 L bag on raw weight is unfair to the bigger one. Divide the empty weight in grams by the capacity in litres and the comparison becomes fair. The lower the number, the less of your load is the bag itself.
- Find the empty weight. If it is not listed, ask the seller or weigh it on a kitchen scale.
- Find the capacity in litres. Treat any figure without a unit as a guess.
- Divide grams by litres.
Under 30 g per litre is light. Between 30 and 40 is average for a bag without a frame. Above 40 is heavy for anything you carry daily. Every pack in the table above is under 34, and two are under 25. A 1.2 kg, 28 L laptop backpack works out to about 43.
Does a lighter backpack mean a weaker one?
Not if the grams are saved in the right places. Fieldwrks packs are built from Aerology™ nylon, a proprietary, feather-light, water-resistant exterior fabric, with a durable polyester lining and a bright orange interior so you can find a charger without a torch. The straps are still padded and shaped for the shoulder. The Pitstop's laptop sleeve is padded and suspended, so the laptop hangs above the floor of the bag rather than resting on it.
What you give up is rigidity. A Fieldwrks pack is a flat-fold design with no frame, so it folds flat in a cupboard and takes the shape of whatever you put in it. If you want a bag that stands up empty on a desk, this is the wrong kind of bag. If you want one you forget you are wearing on the walk from the metro, it is the right kind.

Frequently asked questions
Is a light weight backpack strong enough for a laptop?
Yes, if the weight is saved in the frame and hardware rather than the fabric and sleeve. A padded, suspended laptop sleeve in a 620 g pack protects a laptop as well as one in a 1.4 kg pack. What matters is that the sleeve is padded and holds the laptop off the base of the bag.
What is a good weight for a lightweight backpack?
For a 20 to 35 L daily or travel backpack, anything under 850 g empty is light, and under 650 g is very light. Judge it per litre as well: under 30 g per litre means the bag is a small share of the load you carry, whatever its size.
Why are Fieldwrks backpacks so light?
Three reasons. Aerology™ nylon is a feather-light exterior fabric. There is no frame or frame sheet, so the bags fold flat. And hardware is kept to what a pocket actually needs. The result is 620 g for the 26 L Pitstop and 780 g for the 35 L Reroute.
Is a lightweight backpack good for travel?
It is the best kind for cabin travel, because domestic airlines count the bag itself in your cabin allowance. A 780 g Reroute leaves more of that allowance for clothes than a 1.5 kg pack does. Water-resistant nylon also shrugs off drizzle between the taxi and the terminal.
Weigh the bag before you count the pockets. If you want the lightest 26 L laptop pack we make, start with the Pitstop; if you want the most litres per gram, the Reroute. The rest of the range is on the all products page, the fabric story is in our guide to nylon backpack fabric, and the honest answer on rain is in water-resistant vs waterproof backpacks.
