Fieldwrks Switch: the 2-in-1 backpack that turns into a tote

·6 min read

Fieldwrks Switch, the 2-in-1 backpack that converts into a hand tote with snap-closure handles

The Fieldwrks Switch is a 26 L, 805 g backpack that turns into a hand tote: the removable ergonomic shoulder straps tuck into a pocket and snap-closure top handles take over. Inside is a padded sleeve for laptops up to 15.6 inches, a separate iPad sleeve and cinch-cord bottle pockets on the sides. It comes in VCR Blue, Robo Black and Dad Brown.

Key takeaways

  • The Fieldwrks Switch is a 26 L backpack weighing 805 g that converts into a hand tote with removable straps and snap-closure top handles.
  • It has a padded sleeve for laptops up to 15.6 inches plus a separate iPad sleeve, two internal slip pockets and a pen pocket.
  • The shell is Aerology™ nylon, water-resistant and feather-light, with a bright orange interior and a flat-fold design.
  • It comes in VCR Blue, Robo Black and Dad Brown, and its back panel slides over a suitcase handle for airports.

How does the Switch turn from backpack to tote?

The whole idea of a switch 2 in 1 backpack is that the change should take seconds and leave nothing dangling. On the Switch, the ergonomic shoulder straps are removable. Unclip them, and they tuck into a dedicated pocket on the bag so they are out of sight and not swinging against your legs.

Then the snap-closure top handles take over. They are built into the top of the bag, close with a snap so they stay together in your hand, and carry the full 26 L as a tote. Going back the other way is the same in reverse: pull the straps out, clip them on, and the tote is a backpack again.

We built it this way because many convertible bags leave the straps hanging loose or stuff them into a bulge. A strap pocket and real handles make the tote look like a tote. For the general case for these bags, read what is a convertible backpack, and are they worth it.

What does 26 litres hold in the Switch?

26 L is the everyday size. In the Switch that means a 15.6-inch laptop in its sleeve, an iPad in its own sleeve, a notebook, a charger, a light jacket, a lunch box and a water bottle in the side pocket, with room over for a folded shirt or a pair of trainers on a busy day.

The main compartment is a flat-fold design, so when the bag is empty it folds flat rather than standing up hollow, which matters in a small flat or under an airline seat. The front zippered slip-in pocket is the place for the phone, the keys and the boarding pass, reachable without opening the main compartment.

The side bottle pockets expand with a cinch cord, so they take a 1 L bottle and then cinch down flat when the bottle is out. Nothing flaps.

Two sleeves, and why the second one matters

Most office backpacks have one padded sleeve, and the tablet ends up sharing it with the laptop, rubbing against it all day. The Switch has a padded laptop sleeve for devices up to 15.6 inches and a separate iPad sleeve alongside it. Each device has its own slot, and each comes out without disturbing the other.

Around them are two internal slip pockets and a pen pocket. The interior is bright orange, so the black charger on a black lining problem does not exist. The shell is Aerology™ nylon, a proprietary, feather-light, water-resistant exterior fabric with a durable polyester lining. It weighs 805 g with the straps on.

If your daily bag is mostly a work bag, our office backpack guide covers how the Switch sits alongside the other Fieldwrks packs for the commute.

Three days in the life of the Switch

Monday, office. Straps on. Laptop, iPad, charger, lunch. Metro to the office, bag on both shoulders through the crowd, phone in the front pocket for the gate. At the desk, it sits low under the table rather than standing like a box in the aisle.

Wednesday, airport. The built-in back panel slides over the suitcase handle, so the Switch rides on top of the trolley bag through the terminal. At security the laptop and iPad come out of their separate sleeves and go back in the same way. On the plane it goes under the seat in front, straps tucked, handles up, so you can pull it out by the handles without kneeling in the aisle.

Friday, dinner. Straps unclipped and tucked into their pocket, handles snapped together. The same bag that carried a laptop all week walks into a restaurant as a tote in Dad Brown and does not look like it has been to a meeting. The laptop sleeve is still padded; nobody at the table needs to know.

Is the Switch the right 2 in 1 backpack for you?

Yes, if you want one bag for the desk, the flight and the evening, and you carry a laptop plus a tablet. The tote mode is the reason to buy it. If you never need handles, the Pitstop does the same 26 L at 620 g without the conversion.

No, if what you actually need is a convertible travel backpack for a full week away. The Switch is a 26 L everyday bag that also happens to be a tote. For trips with shoes and three days of clothes, the 35 L clamshell Fieldwrks Reroute is the travel bag; it does not convert, it opens flat like a suitcase instead.

As of 2026 the Switch ships free across India, with cash on delivery at no extra charge, 10-day returns and a 12-month warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fieldwrks Switch a convertible backpack?

Yes. The Switch converts from a backpack to a hand tote. The removable ergonomic shoulder straps tuck into a pocket on the bag, and snap-closure top handles carry it as a tote. Switching back means pulling the straps out and clipping them on again.

What laptop fits the Switch?

The padded sleeve fits laptops up to 15.6 inches, which covers most work and student machines. There is a separate sleeve for an iPad or similar tablet, so both devices travel in their own slots. Measure a thick gaming laptop against the sleeve before you buy.

How much does the Switch weigh and what size is it?

The Switch is 26 litres and weighs 805 g, including the removable straps. It is made from Aerology™ nylon, a feather-light, water-resistant exterior with a durable polyester lining, and folds flat when empty. It is available in VCR Blue, Robo Black and Dad Brown.

Can the Switch go on a plane as a personal item?

It is a soft, frameless 26 L bag that compresses to fit under the seat in front, and its back panel slides over a suitcase handle in the terminal. Personal-item limits vary by airline and change, so confirm the current size and weight rule before you fly.

If you have been carrying a backpack to work and a second bag for the evening, the Switch is the one that replaces both. Pick a colour, or see the rest of the range at all Fieldwrks packs.
